Sub Focus: Biography, Discography and More | EDM Encyclopedia
Introduction
Sub Focus is the stage name of Nicolaas Douwe Douwma, an English DJ, music producer, and songwriter from Guildford, Surrey. Active since 2003, he is one of the most recognized names in drum and bass. His releases span labels including RAM Records, Virgin EMI, Mercury, Owsla, and Casablanca Records.
Douwma discovered electronic music production at age 13 after realizing he could create complete tracks on a computer without playing traditional instruments. His early influences include The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, and the jungle track “Incredible” by M-Beat and General Levy, which introduced him to drum and bass.
His breakthrough came in 2003 when a friend passed his demo CD to RAM Records founder Andy C, who signed every track on the spot. Since then, Sub Focus has released four studio albums and numerous singles that have charted on the UK Singles Chart and UK Dance Chart.
Genre and Style
Sub Focus produces primarily drum and bass, with excursions into drumstep, dubstep, electro house, and UK garage. His tracks are known for high production value, heavy basslines, and melodic synth work. He studied sound engineering at college, which informed his approach to mixing and arrangement.
